Bookstore Manager Position

Position Description

The Friends’ Place is a unique book, media and gift store located in Burton Barr Central Library. Operated by the Friends and staffed almost entirely by volunteers, it generates revenue for the organization which is then used to support library programs and services. The Friends’ Place Manager is responsible for a variety of tasks as well as revenue goals, membership goals and volunteer supervision. This is a part-time position, working 15-20 hours weekly.

Responsibilities:

Retail Management

  • Operate a cash register and point-of-sale system for sales and reporting
  • Sort, select and price donated books, other media for sale
  • Order new merchandise
  • Serve a diverse customer base including organization’s valued members
  • Set membership & sales goals
  • Manage/maintain incoming books & media donations at Burton Barr Central Library as well as workroom

Staff & Volunteer Supervision

  • Supervise paid Assistant Bookstore Manager
  • Train, schedule volunteers; supervise as needed
  • Work with the Volunteer Coordinator to cultivate volunteer talents and skills while effectively maintaining bookstore mission

Merchandising

  • Rotate merchandise
  • Window display changes
  • Coordinate promotions and work with Outreach Coordinator to publicize

 Other

  • Know and communicate FPPL’s mission with library staff, volunteers, and customers
  • Other duties as needed

Qualifications:

  • Prior retail experience a must
  • Self-motivated, capable of working autonomously
  • Interest in books
  • Ability to use a computer as well as the Microsoft Office suite of programs
  • Enjoy working with the general public
  • Ability to stand for at least 3 hours and lift up to 25 pounds regularly
  • Able to spend time both at a desk and working on feet
  • Ability to interact professionally and easily with donors, volunteers, Phoenix Public Library staff & leadership, City staff & leadership, Friends board members and the public

Availability and Hours:

Shifts will be staggered for 15-20 hours a week. In the event of a scheduling issue (such as a call-in or no-show), it is critical that the Friends’ Place Manager be available at short notice to coordinate coverage. More hours may be made available.
